Why We Needed a Small Paris Test Before Talking About a Friendship Network
A new social product can look convincing on a presentation slide long before anyone has met a familiar face twice. A small city pilot forces the uncomfortable question of.
A new social product can look convincing on a presentation slide long before anyone has met a familiar face twice. A small city pilot forces the uncomfortable question of what happened in the real world.
The question we were trying to answer
As of Week 40, our public-facing work centered on a Paris-first proposition and the practical idea that friendship takes more than an initial introduction. This founder essay reflects on intentions, not verified long-term retention outcomes.
In a small pilot, the consequence of a disappointing experience is personal. Someone may have made time, crossed the city, spent money and arrived with optimism. Responsible product language must be specific about what is arranged and humble about the personal relationships we cannot manufacture.
Why the distinction matters
A pilot is useful when it is designed to reveal difficulties: travel distances, timing, first-arrival anxiety, mismatched interests and the effort required for another plan. A convenient number of sign-ups is not a substitute for observing these.
Historical context matters. Decisions made after 4 October 2026 must not be described as capabilities available during this earlier week. An article written later can look back with clarity while still indicating what was an open question at the time.
An example of the design problem
Consider someone living in the 13th arrondissement who is invited to an activity across Paris on a work night. Their decision to decline may say more about the journey and schedule than about the type of person they could befriend.
A founder story can explain the question that motivated a design choice without pretending the choice has already worked. An early prototype, an interview theme and a verified deployment are separate kinds of evidence. We want the reader to know which one is being discussed.
Questions and commitments we can test
- Define who a specific pilot is intended to serve and what is still being tested.
- Record meaningful attendance rather than only applications.
- Invite critique from people who opted out as well as participants.
- Avoid declaring product-market fit from a small hand-selected group.
A step-by-step suggestion is only a starting point. We do not want to turn private participant stories into marketing material. Descriptions here are hypothetical illustrations; no identifying quotes, contact details, confidential finances or unpublished participant data belong in an article.
What we must not claim
An early pilot is not a representative social-science trial and cannot demonstrate a population-wide solution to loneliness. Confidential plans and targets should remain internal.
Founder approval required; do not present proposed October 2026 experiments as completed historical outcomes.
One limitation is that our team has incentives to find our own ideas convincing. That is why an interview anecdote is not a citywide statistic and why enthusiastic feedback is not proof of sustained attendance. The hard task is to preserve doubts even when presenting a clear company point of view.
What comes after the hypothesis
The goal is to learn which design assumptions are wrong and which practical obstacles may be worth reducing, before claiming the city has found a new answer to friendship.
What we still need to learn
We need to understand which practical constraints matter, what participants want to control themselves and whether any value lasts beyond the first promising impression. The answer may be inconvenient, and that is part of the reason to test.
Small does not automatically mean scientifically representative
A tightly scoped launch can produce high-quality observations about specific practical frictions. It cannot estimate how all adults in Paris behave, nor can it establish long-term outcomes in a few weeks. Decisions about recruitment, venue choice and distance will shape the experiences being measured. The company must report those boundaries when sharing a learning, and distinguish any later commercial or product changes from assumptions that were on the table during this earlier Week 40.
A three-part reality check
First, verify whether a statement describes a public product fact or only a research intention. Second, protect the people who helped us learn: their private stories are not ours to publish casually. Third, compare the narrative to the actual launch timeline. A decision made later cannot be transported back into the week of 28 September–4 October 2026. The right editorial standard is accuracy before an impressive storyline.
Two small adaptations
A product team can ask whether people understand an invitation and whether they can attend it; neither tells us automatically that they gained a friend. We can also ask whether someone would repeat an activity and compare that answer with observed behavior—carefully, with consent and without publicizing private information. Those are separate feedback loops, and they point to different design work.
What a good result would look like
A credible founder story is one in which the reader can distinguish what we hoped, what we tested and what remains uncertain. It should be possible to disagree with our approach without disputing the basic facts. That is the standard for these reflections before editorial approval.
For adults in Paris
Where the question connects to finding or repeating activities in Paris, remember that a city offering can lower coordination effort but cannot promise personal chemistry. g3t focuses on the idea of meeting people in real life and seeing familiar faces again.
